The Learning Suite
Schools should consider how best to integrate 'learning how to learn' into the curriculum - focusing on the skills and attitudes pupils need to become better learners. - 2020 Vision, December 2006
With increased emphasis on personalised learning and metacogiiton, the focus is on helping students to understand how they learn and to take responsibility for the process. Teachers are asked to engage in more dialogue with learners but at the same time to make then more independent. Whatever the sector, age group or ability level, good teaching and the proper control of behaviour is seen to rely on learning as an active process that needs to be discussed. At the same time, research shows that 'learning how to learn' is most profitably discussed in a specific subject or vocational context.
Materials in this suite are designed to support these developments. Adaptable for many contexts and differentiated by academic level, they provide:
Background notes to keep teachers up to date with current thinking.
Pdf files that can be used directly with students to encourage both dialogue and self-analysis, available on-line or loadable to your intranet.
Files in Word that can be printed immediately, accessed on line, loaded to an intranet or edited by local teachers to include class or student-specific references.
There may be several versions of a single idea according to age or ability level, with associated ideas to make some work more visual or kinaesthetic. Every file is analysed by length, word count, reading age, reading ease score and grade level. The whole suite is therefore useful for CPD and teacher training, as well as day-to-day support for busy teachers.
Many information sheets have questions attached for reinforcement, so they also serve as comprehension exercises. Once licensed. your organisation can also use the development team to adjust or extend examples for other academic or vocational contexts. You can view on-line the list of contents from the teacher's introduction file. For a temporary password to inspect files in more detail, just email info(at)bpfe.org.uk.
On-line access to all files by all members of a single school or college, with email support, is available by annual licence at £50 per year or for the one-off price of £200 (no VAT).
If you decide to load files to your intranet, we can supply them and update them through your IT Dept. by various means at no extra cost. Colleges who have already purchased files entitled Eating and Learning or Making the Difference will attract a 10% discount on either method.
Individual students or parents, operating outside formal support systems, can obtain the full set for personal use for £20 per year, or a one-off price of £50.
